Hidden Cameras, Schwarzenegger, Minka Kelly, and a Llama Mix it Up to Make a Memorable Super Bowl Commercial

Take candid cameras, a likeable guy in a local bar, lots of twins, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Minka Kelley, and a llama—and you have the setup for one of the best beer spots in Super Bowl history.

With the never-diminishing popularity of hidden camera TV shows, home security camera clips on YouTube, and reality television, the ad execs for Bud Light probably viewed their concept as a sure formula for a viral Super Bowl spot. Throw in a ping pong match with Arnold Schwarzenegger, actress Minka Kelly, a DJ party in a limo, Don Cheadle and a llama in an elevator, and you have Super Bowl history. Oh, and don’t forget the twins.

Arnie, the king of one-liners, is a crackup, as he challenges the hidden camera victim, Ian Up-For-Whatever, to a sudden-death ping pong match:

“Ready my little man, here?”

“It’s not a bad shot for my little princess.”

Despite the wacky characters, twins, Arnie, llamas and Minka, the real stars here are the hidden cameras. Without the natural reactions of Ian Up-For-Whatever, on hidden cameras scattered throughout improbable situations, this spot would not have carried the same viral power.

“Camera footage always has the potential to go viral,” explained Charles Black, CEO of iWatchLife, who specialize in do-it-yourself cloud-based smart home monitoring  to capture life’s special moments. “Home videos go viral, sometimes with millions of views, on YouTube, when there’s a hilarious child, dog or cat. Smart home monitoring isn’t just for security anymore.”

See why this “candid camera” Bud Light spot earned over 17 million views to date online:

Some of the commenters on the YouTube page for this commercial agree:

  • “I love the set up!”
  • “Maybe the best hidden camera commercial ever.”
  • “Greatest commercial I ever saw in my life.”

Or, perhaps the whole spot is best described by Bud Light:

“Bud Light. The perfect beer for when you somehow find yourself in a limo with Reggie Watts and some bachelorettes, then get styled by Minka Kelly, before Don Cheadle, a Llama named Lilly and the identical twin of the girl you just met take you to a party, where you defeat Arnold Schwarzenegger in a sudden-death ping pong match that puts you onstage with OneRepublic.”
